Structured Data - file captions coming this week (January 2019)

Hi all, following up on last month's announcement...

Multilingual file captions will be released this week, on either Wednesday, 9 November or Thursday, 10 November 2019. Captions are a feature to add short, translatable descriptions to files. Here's some links you might want to look follow before the release, if you haven't already:

  1. Read over the help page for using captions - I wrote the page on mediawiki.org because captions are available for any MediaWiki user, feel free to host/modify a copy of the page here on Commons.
  2. Test out using captions on Beta Commons.
  3. Leave feedback about the test on the captions test talk page, if you have anything you'd like to say prior to release.

Additionally, there will be an IRC office hour on Thursday, 10 January with the Structured Data team to talk about file captions, as well as anything else the community may be interested in. Date/time conversion, as well as a link to join, are on Meta.

Thanks for your time, I look forward to seeing those who can make it to the IRC office hour on Thursday. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 20:22, 7 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Captions in January

The previous message from today says captions will be released in November in the text. January is the correct month. My apologies for the potential confusion. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 20:43, 7 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Category discussion warning

Paintings in The J. Paul Getty Museum has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Deletion discussions and copyvio speedy deletion

I saw that you started deletion discussions for two images I had tagged as copyright violations, only to immediately close them and delete the images. I assume the point was to add Category:Undelete in 2025 so we can get the images back once they're out of copyright. Can you maybe take a look at my deleted contributions? I think I tagged more than two as copyvio (plus a bunch of deletion discussions for less clear-cut cases), and if there's another or two, getting them undeleted in 2025 might also be useful. Another question: Is there any rule on when this "nominate and categorize" approach is preferred to "speedy delete"? Thanks, Huon (talk) 01:05, 12 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Huon,
Yes, it is recommended to list the files for undeletion if we know a fixed date. The other solution is to manually add the file name in the category, but creating a DR is faster. ;oP I deleted the files you nominated. Regards, Yann (talk) 07:51, 12 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
File:Benz-Patent-Motorwagen Replica Mannheim rem 2.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hello Yann - a while back you were able to help me with a misnamed image of St Donat's Castle when it was TFA. I'm now back with the begging bowl re. the above. We are wanting to use it in a planned FAC for Sissinghurst Castle Garden. However, there are concerns that it's not appropriately tagged. You can find the discussion on Wiki at Talk:Sissinghurst Castle Garden#Image of Sir Richard's house, [1]. I'd be very grateful if you could have a look and, should you agree with the suggesting tagging - a licence for the photograph itself, and then a UK-Right of Panorama tag - make the necessary changes or advise me as to how I could do it myself. Thanks very much in advance. KJP1 (talk) 16:39, 13 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Hjeuruht179: Hi,
As mentioned in the deletion request, these are screenshots from Vietnamese TV shows and are copyrighted. Almost every picture is under a copyright. You are not allowed to upload them here without a permission from the copyright holder. Only pictures you take with your own camera are allowed. Regards, Yann (talk) 17:02, 14 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank you for your help and sharing. We can upload photos and have sources, authors ... obviously can we? I saw many images on the network that could be uploaded. I have not understood these regulations

Files considered for deletion (own works)

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I am very cognizant of copyrights and infringements, and I intent to abide by Wikipedia policies. The below files are all my own works if you consider I cropped and edited the photos. Some of them are completely my own works. Is there a way to reflect where the original photos came from? Also, is there a way to remove from consideration the photos which I took, or photoshopped?

@John2690-john2690: Hi,
These are small files without EXIF data, and in PNG format, which suggests that they were copied from the Internet.
But cropping and editing a picture doesn't make it your own. It is still the work of another person.
For your own pictures, it would be better to upload the original images with full EXIF data. They also would be more useful for Wikipedia. And you need to send a permission for the logo. Regards, Yann (talk) 16:13, 12 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks for the information. Still learning. Based on what you're saying, feel free to remove all but these files: NathanJohnson and Goldy, Pine County Fair, Pine City Pride Flier, PICKM Map and Tommy Ryman Head.--John2690-john2690 (talk) 14:58, 14 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

 Question Would the first year or the last year mentioned in files like File:500zl r (1948-1950).jpg be the more important year as far as restoring it? Abzeronow (talk) 17:42, 14 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Abzeronow: If 1948 is the year of publication, then it is in the public domain now. Checking a currency catalog might be useful. Regards, Yann (talk) 17:48, 14 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Can't see the image but if it matches this http://banknotypolskie.pl/banknoty/395/500zl/ it looks like 1948 would be the publication date. Abzeronow (talk) 17:54, 14 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Undelete

Hi Yann can you undelete File:ETN 50 g plastic explosive effect in steel.png? If you look at the other users uploads, it seems likely that YouTube channel belongs to them, so they are the copyright holder.--BevinKacon (talk) 22:11, 15 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Yann, I was wondering how I go about requesting a block for a user who repeatedly uploads copyrighted images, claiming their CC 4.0? User:Amishai GG has continuously uploaded images of new governors and/or state elected officials, despite warnings. Their talk page is a good example of all their uploads that have been deleted. They continue (w/latest upload on 17 January) and aren’t likely to stop. Thanks, Corky 06:23, 18 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi,
I always remove them. What is this useful for anyway? Regards, Yann (talk) 18:48, 28 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Why did you remove my tagging of this file without any explanation? If you read the linked terms of service you will see that Google Chrome is proprietary software and therefore screenshots of it cannot be released under random free licences. Copyright violations are normally taken seriously on Commons. The issue needs to be addressed and not just reverted without comment. - Ahunt (talk) 19:12, 28 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The Chrome interface is de minimis here. Regards, Yann (talk) 05:53, 29 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Okay, thanks for your explanation on that. Perhaps in future you could add an explanation of the reason for your revert in your edit summary. - Ahunt (talk) 14:47, 29 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
One more question: The file is under a BSD licence which from the evidence is clearly incorrect. How to we fix the licensing? - Ahunt (talk) 16:53, 29 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ah right, I removed this one. Thanks for caring. Regards, Yann (talk) 17:32, 29 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

ogg to oga

Hello from Category:Greek pronunciation. During renaming of an xxxx.ogg file (e.g. File:Ell-Hlios.ogg to File:El-ήλιος.ogg requested here) I see that it changes extension (here). It also happened with File:Ell-nychta.ogg to File:El-νύχτα.oga. Is this normal? I do not see any 'oga' files in the Category. (Sorry for being ignorant). Sarri.greek (talk) 19:09, 3 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sorry, I have just read the section 'Thanks, but' (above). No need to reply.
This means, that no renaming can be done for ogg files: A new COPY must be done. (reuploading with new name). I guess. Sarri.greek (talk) 19:25, 3 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Catégorisation des cartes d'État-major

Bonjour Yann

J'ai hésité hier à ajouter des catégories relatives aux départements ("old map of..." and "Topographic maps of...") car je me disais :

Cordialement, --Poudou99 (talk) 13:30, 29 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Poudou99: Bonjour,

--Poudou99 (talk) 18:34, 5 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello. I am the creator of "File:Venezuela president recognition map 2019.svg" and was hoping to make an update. I know that there has been some edit warring, but it is important that this map is up to date because it is being utilized throughout Wikipedia. I understand the edit warring, but it should be dealt with on an individual level and not blocking the whole file. If there is a policy of single reverts or something similar that can be used on Commons, I think that is more suitable. --ZiaLater (talk) 05:16, 9 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Picture on Satyagraha

Hello Yann!

Picture to describe M.K./Mahatma Gandhi's Satyagraha doctrine. Own interpretation.

Some time ago I asked a question on a picture about Satyagraha here on Wikipedia Commons. I suggested at that time, that I would draw an own picture on Satyagraha because then there are no copyright or other problems. This happened.

And I think that you could help me here! :-) I have translated the picture from German to English here.

Would you like to check, if my translation is correct? And do you think that the picture is understandable?

Thank you, Yann!

Friendly greetings from Bavaria/Germany, Stefan Quark48 (talk) 11:53, 10 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Quark48: Hi,
Quite beautiful, but what is the objective? I don't think this could be used in Wikipedia, so ? Regards, Yann (talk) 13:35, 10 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you for your answer! Well, the German version of this picture is already being used in the article de:Satyagraha for illustration purposes. It has also the notice in its caption, that it is an graphical interpretation. :-)
My hope is that maybe a graphical interpretation like this can be very useful instead of possibly copyright-problematic official material. For example: File:Mg-satyagraha.jpg. I hope you can remember my attempts to get a better version of this picture. If I understood it right, there are problems with freedom of panorama and other copyright restrictions in many countries. And spreading good things (and I hope you agree with me that Satyagraha is such a good thing) with graphical interpretations is an alternative to this. I hope you understand my standpoint. :-) Greetings, Quark48 (talk) 14:38, 10 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Quark48: Yes, my concern is about "Own interpretation". This should be avoided in such cases. Regards, Yann (talk) 15:40, 10 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

There are some parallel name change request to other images. I am unaware of an image set that these changes harmonize; QG, could you please clarify? The claim that these products are "heat-not-burn", do not emit smoke, are not cigarettes, and should certainly not be taxed or regulated as cigarettes is heavily used in messaging by Phillip Morris, which sells them, but is disputed in reliable sources. en:IQOS and the associated talk page, where there has been a consensus for "smoke", will give the history of this disagreement. I was the original uploader, and I think that the original titles are more accurate. I'm not really sure what I should do about this, as I've not had files I uploaded renamed before, as best I recall. HLHJ (talk) 03:21, 30 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You recently stated "Agreed that the title is poor, but "heated tobacco" is worse."[2] The article was moved to Electric smoking system without obtaining a clear consensus. The current title is original research and POV. Electrically-heated smoking devices is not a common name. An entire section contain mostly MEDRS violations and failed verification content. Those are not reliable sources. The word smoke was previously removed from the body of the article. I am not the only one who disagreed with the file names. Let us not conduct the article discussion here. HLHJ (talk) 01:09, 31 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Any hints why? And where a random user should look for information which undeletion procedure was applied here? Is the DR still pending? Also, the license template seems to be invalid as 2013 > 1957. Ankry (talk) 14:06, 12 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi,
I am working on it. These are obviously old images, so 2013 is not the correct date. But as I don't read Japanese, some help may be needed. Regards, Yann (talk) 14:11, 12 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I undeleted more from Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Gregory 14. Most of these files are OK. I would appreciate if someone helps. In some cases, best would be to undelete and start a new DR, as it is quite difficult to find the information with the file deleted. @Abzeronow: Would you like to have a look please? Yann (talk) 16:00, 12 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Before 1945 seems reasonable for those two photographs. I can't seem to go to the webpage in the source so I can't run it through Google translate. Abzeronow (talk) 16:06, 12 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Nominated File:Christian Bansa.jpg for deletion. Would need more info on that photograph to keep imho. Most of the those files seem OK though. Abzeronow (talk) 16:36, 12 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

PD-old-100-expired

Hi Yann, Can you explain to me when we are supposed to use this template? (I mean the "expired" part.) I've been looking for an explanation, but so far have not figured it out. Best, --Robert.Allen (talk) 10:30, 13 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Robert.Allen: This is for the copyright in USA. You can compare {{PD-old-100}} and {{PD-old-100-expired}}. Regards, Yann (talk) 10:32, 13 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Do you know when one should use -expired rather than -1923? The result looks identical to me. --Robert.Allen (talk) 10:38, 13 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

{{PD-old-100-1923}}{{PD-old-100-expired}}

@Robert.Allen: Now you should use {{PD-old-100-expired}}. PD-old-100-1923 is a redirection. Regards, Yann (talk) 10:44, 13 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks! Sorry, I did not notice that! Dummy, me! Best, --Robert.Allen (talk) 10:46, 13 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Robert.Allen: PD-1923 was right for many years but finally became obsolete this year as works first published in 1923 in the US entered the public domain. Instead of renaming to PD-1924 (which would mean renaming every year), after some discussion we settled on "expired". - Alexis Jazz ping plz 16:35, 17 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

My 4 illegal uploads

Hello Yann,

firstly, I would like to notice that I did NOT upload further material after your warning. I had uploaded all four files at once and after that no more.

Sorry for my late response, because I was on vacation this week. I had consulted the upload of the files with YjM who had edited the Wiki page "Transnacionální radikální strana" but he also could not help me in this matter.

The four files I had uploaded are scans from one flyer of a political party which appeared during the enthousiastic times after 1989 revolution. I found the flyer in my personal archive, and I found it important to point to one of the members from that time, Jaromír Soukup, who now is owner of the important media complex Empresa media, TV owner, moderator, and announced candidate for next president elections in the Czech republic. The flyer is an undoubted document, so I wanted to make it disposable to the Czech public as part of articles about Mr. Soukup, and about the party, the Transnacionální radikální strana.

Therefore, I uploaded the four parts of the flyer. After a while, I received warnings from a bot to provide copyright information but neither me nor YjM were capable to do so (especially on a mobile phone screen). Therefore, I decided to regret to this documentation and to have it automatically removed after 7 days, but I was sorry to actively remove it from the site. I understand that there are copyrights supposedly attached to the party. But it has been resolved almost 30 years ago, and according to my understanding, it is in every party's interest to be public on the most open level, this is the very sense of a flyer.

So what is your opinion in this case: Is it an illegal upload or is there a version of copyright that tolerates this?

Thanks a lot for your advice, Peter Wagner — Preceding unsigned comment added by PeterOWagner (talk • contribs) 10:00, 17 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@PeterOWagner: Hi,
On Commons, we only accept works with a free license, or in the public domain. Therefore, you are not allowed to upload any document not created by you without either a permission, or an evidence of a free license or public domain. Your files show neither. URAA question

Since URAA tends to make me rather angry when I think about it, just want to check on something: 1924 painting from a French artist who died in 1937. Copyright restored by URAA or not? (would any WWI extensions come into play there?) Abzeronow (talk) 15:54, 19 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Abzeronow: Yes, I feel the same. 1937 is on the border line. Probably URAA, but who knows?
BTW, I noticed that you edited Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Paintings by Theo van Doesburg (which is in my watchlist). We should be able to undelete at least the first 2 files, isn't? Regards, Yann (talk) 16:03, 19 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, I was going to request undeletion for that "circa 1922" one. So I think that's cleared the URAA by now. Abzeronow (talk) 16:05, 19 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Y.haruo: Good catch, but I don't know why you posted here. When these will be in the public domain in Japan? Regards, Yann (talk) 07:08, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Although referring to the comment of the files, please forgive me if it was wrong.
A new copyright law came into effect at the end of last year, and the term of protection of Japan was extended to 70 years after author's death. Therefore, the copyright of these works expires January 1, 2043.
But, it does not apply to copyrighted work that became the public domain before the amendment of the law. The protection term of the works which the authors died before 1968 is 50 years.--Y.haruo (talk) 07:56, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

URAA images restored today

Yann, I don't like the URAA any more than you do, but at the moment it is the law in the United States and our clear policy is that images must be free of copyright in the source country and in the United States. Our policy as set forth at Commons:URAA-restored copyrights is clear -- if the URAA applies to an image, we must delete it.

"If the end result of copyright evaluation is that there is significant doubt about the freedom of a file under US or local law, the file must be deleted in line with the precautionary principle."

Unless and until we change either the law or our policy, it seems to me that as our most senior Admin you have a duty to follow policy and not restore images that are clearly under copyright in the USA.

I have no desire to start battling with you, but if you don't change your ways on this, I will have no choice. .     Jim . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 23:04, 9 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi,
Well, nothing is really clear about URAA. No one can really be sure that a file is still under copyright because of URAA: there are various probabilities depending on each case. We have been undeleting or keeping these files for the last 5 years, and although there is no consensus, I think there is a majority of people for keeping them. And AFAICT, the majority is growing. You were not active for some time, so you need to get informed the current situation.
We already have exceptions for various cases (PD-Art, FoP, etc.), so having an exception for URAA wouldn't be so new. Basically, we should keep files which are in the public domain world wide, except USA (and Mexico). Regards, Yann (talk) 23:26, 9 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
First, I don't see how you can say that nothing is really clear about URAA -- the law is clear that in almost all cases if a work was under copyright in its source country on the URAA date, then it will be under copyright in the USA as if it had been under copyright here from its creation. The USA has a long copyright, but so does Mexico and other countries.
Second, fine, I don't object to our changing Commons policy. If there is a majority that believes we should ignore URAA, then we should change policy (this assumes that WMF legal will agree that we can igore USA law). However, I do object to some of our members, including you, ignoring policy and doing what they think is best. .     Jim . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 08:54, 10 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The issue is that we often do not know when the copyright expired, so we can't be sure if URAA applies or not. Then the image may have been published in USA at the time. Typical cases are pictures of Gandhi from the 1930s: we don't know when they were first published, and we don't know either if they were published in USA or not, but Gandhi was already a world famous personality, so it is quite probable. That's why I advocate an exception.
WMF Legal opinion on the matter is that the community should decide. IMO this is similar than pictures of recent sculptures and works of art allowed because of FoP. If we would apply the law strictly, we could not have these on Commons, as FoP in USA doesn't allow them. Regards, Yann (talk) 10:54, 10 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

DR

Hi Yann, The consensus over at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Sexy librarian look (15022862928).jpg was to keep the image, If you object to the keeping of this image then you should re-dr the image,
The OP's rationale was refuted by 3-4 editors so as such this should not have been deleted,
Many thanks, –Davey2010Talk 19:10, 10 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The scope is a debatable issue, but this image used with this title is a privacy violation at least. Regards, Yann (talk) 23:29, 10 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I don't care, The consensus at those DRs was to keep so again please restore all of the images you have deleted (IE File:Chad would make a great sexy librarian.jpg, File:Sexy librarian look (15022862928).jpg, File:The Sexy Librarian Look (3902980364).jpg and File:Sexy librarian (481593155).jpg), If you don't I'll take this matter to AN/U,
Like I said you're more than welcome to re-dr the file but at present you have abused your admin tools by deleting files that had consensus for keeping,
It's no different to File:London Eye - 01.jpg being sent to DR > Admin deletes even tho everyone said keep - You just wouldnt delete it would you ?.... same applies here,
Again you can either restore the files and send them back to DR or I can take you to AN/U and we can discuss it there, Your choice. –Davey2010Talk 15:43, 11 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I just closed pending DRs, and there is no consensus to keep any of them. You are welcome to ask for undeletion. And do not make threats. Regards, Yann (talk) 16:02, 11 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes you did however you need to weigh the consensus too which you clearly haven't done - You've simply took a distaste to them and deleted them,
this DR had overwhelming consensus to keep whereas the other 3 had one Keep - You as a DR closer should have relisted the other 3 (and then closed this one as Keep),
If you genuinely believe these are deletable then restore the files and resend them back to DR - I'm sorry but there absolutely no consensus to delete these files so again kindly undelete them and send them back to DR - The images have now got attention at the CFD so as such more people can weigh in and if they're deleted again the fine I will be happy with that but at present you have deleted 4 images ignoring everyones comments at those DRS and I firmly believe these was no consensus to delete those 4 images,
If you genuinely believe your actions are correct then as I say undelete them and send them back to DR and everyone can have their say,
Thanks, Regards, –Davey2010Talk 17:24, 11 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I count 3 for keeping, and 2 (including mine) for deleting. I don't see any consensus. Regards, Yann (talk) 17:30, 11 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm talking about the DRs not the CFD ?, The DR listed above had 2 !keeps and 1 !delete (nominator) .... Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 17:37, 11 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Copyright violation dispute.

You have deleted a file and sent a delete request to another that I've uploaded under the ruling of copyright. However, I believe the request and the deletion were made in error as neither violated any copyright nor needs any fair use protections.

For the 7 Grand Dad image, the screenshot in question is from a game with no copyright to begin with and is thus a free screenshot. 7 GRAND DAD is a pirate game so it would be illegal to copyright it and the J.Y. Company no longer exists technically making the game vaporware.

As for the Animation Magic logo, it is simply a colored font and does not meet the threshold of originality, hence the PD-textlogo tag I used. Also, your nomination reasoning is just the tag with a question mark. That is inadequate reasoning for why something should be deleted. If you do not know the reasoning for the tag, just ask. User talk pages are available for a reason.

I look forward to your response and hope we can come to a settlement soon and without any bad faith.

Thank you for your time. AwesumIndustrys (talk) 02:51, 11 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@AwesumIndustrys: Hi,
Yes, I am not sure about the Magic logo, that's why I didn't delete it right away. You can add your comment in the deletion request.
For the 7 Grand Dad image, I am afraid, it doesn't work that way. There is probably still a copyright because it is a recent creation, and it is probably a derivative work of the Mario character. You can still ask more opinions on COM:VPC, and ask for undeletion on COM:UDR. Regards, Yann (talk) 08:36, 11 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Can you help with something real quick?

Hi again. I'm coaching a new editor, User:Devlet Geray, and we are trying to remove a photo mistakenly believed to be acceptable for commons (it wasn't). He overwrote the file with a completely different photo that is acceptable on Commons because he wanted to make sure the copyrighted image didn't get used anywhere else...but he didn't know about the issues with overwriting files. I've already explained all the issues with overwriting files with him on VK, and I hope you are forgiving and lenient since there was no bad faith and he tried to fix it when it happened. Can you just delete the old version of File:2019 March in Moscow about internet.jpg (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/archive/0/0d/20190311225900%211029_March_in_Moscow_about_internet.jpg) and the redirect (https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:%D0%90%D0%B9%D1%88%D0%B5_%D0%A1%D0%B5%D0%B8%D1%82%D0%BC%D1%83%D1%80%D0%B0%D1%82%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%B0.jpg&redirect=no)? Deletion requests

Hi there. Regarding this; before I uploaded any images, I was advised to look through the licensing for various video game logos, which I did, seeing that by far the most common tag was PD-text. So I uploaded the files with this tag. Now, if that's incorrect, so be it, but I'm a little confused how The Settlers Online logo, for example, meets the threshold of originality, but images like this, this, this, and this do not. Thanks. Bertaut (talk) 19:16, 12 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Bertaut: I am not certain, but I think these logos are too complex, and therefore have a copyright. You can add your comment(s) in the deletion request. Then another admin will decide. Regards, Yann (talk) 23:39, 12 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Okay, will do. Cheers. Bertaut (talk) 01:30, 13 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Structured Data - development update, March 2019

This text is also posted on the Structured Data hub talk page. You can reply there with questions, comments, or concerns.

A development update for the current work by the Structured Data on Commons team:

After the release of multilingual file captions, work began on getting depicts and other statements ready for release. These were originally scheduled for release in February and into March, however there are currently two major blockers to finishing this work (T215642, T217157). We will know more next week about when depicts and statements can likely be ready for testing and then release; until then I've tentatively updated the release schedule.

Once the depicts feature is ready for testing, it will take place in two stages on TestCommons. The first is checking the very basics; is the design comfortable, how does the simple workflow of adding/editing/removing statements work, and building up help and process pages from there. The second part is a more detailed test of depicts and other statements, checking the edge-case examples of using the features, bugs that did not come up during simple testing, etc. Additionally we'll be looking with the community for bugs in interaction with bots, gadgets, and other scripts once the features are live on Commons. Please let me know if you're interesting in helping test and fix these bugs if they show up upon release, it is really hard to find them in a test environment or, in some cases, bugs won't show up in a testing environment at all.

One new thing is definitely coming within the next few weeks, pending testing: the ability to search for captions. This is done using the inlabel keyword in search strings, and will be the first step in helping users find content that is specifically structured data. I'll post a notice when that feature is live and ready for use.

Thanks, let me know if you have questions about these plans. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 21:34, 12 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

About "Camino Caicumeo.png" and "Camino Real (Chile).png"

Hi Yann, I received your messages about problems with my pictures "Camino Caicumeo.png" and "Camino Real (Chile).png", but I didn't get a clear idea about the problem with these images. You commented both files as "derivative works" because I stated in the description that the drawings are based in old maps from articles and books, and that I should include copyright information about those original sources. On the contrary, I said that those maps are "own work", because both maps were manually drawed (maybe with imperfections) in Maphub (a CC map design platform), with no parts of the original maps in them. Should I include copyright information from original sources even in these cases? Both are maps from XVIII century anyway...--Ppn87 (talk) 12:48, 13 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Ppn87: Hi,
Your maps are derivative works, so yes, you need to provide the source(s) of your map, and ensure that they are under a free license. Regards, Yann (talk) 13:46, 13 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

(talk page stalker) @Everyonegoes2018: that may be true, but under Commons policy it’s not a valid argument for keeping copyrighted work. For one thing, we are concerned about ‘legal exposure’ not only on our own behalf (or the WMF’s), but also that of any & all reusers of the content here. For another, it is not unusual for a bankrupt company’s assets, including its intellectual properties, to be sold by the receivers or whoever, sometimes years after the fact. And the rights might still belong to an artist or agency if the company used the work only under licence.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:44, 16 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I have to admit I don't know a lot about bringing over files. I usually just put them on Commons, and if I do put them on en-wiki, it's for a reason that will remain true for some time. Since I kind of want to maintain the rather large upload histories, could you possibly help me to bring them over? They should have the licensing information from File:Cavalleria Rusticana - Alfio and Turiddu embrace.jpg, but the templates for that don't even exist on en-wiki. @Chlorineer: First calm down. Your URL is not valid either, so I don't see the point. It seems you have an agenda, and this is not accepted. And finally, nobody believes that you are the photographer of these images. Yann (talk) 23:18, 18 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Yann: First, lay off the condescending tone. I don't make reactionary edits. Second, https://www.cpp.edu is a valid URL. Third, you claim I have an agenda without proof. Fourth, where is this survey you conducted where you found that "nobody believes that you are the photographer of [this image]?" It's my work. I took the picture. Copyright violations

As for pictures like my high school logo picture - as far as I know it has not been legally copyrighted by anyone, which means that everyone has rights to it, isn’t that right?

If that’s so, how do I make this clear and publish it without backlash? — Preceding unsigned comment added by LordParsifal (talk • contribs)

Copyright violations - Bertil hammarkrans

Hey!

Thanks for your mail. I apologize if I have made any mistake. I am therefore very grateful for getting help so that this will be correct.

I have uploaded two pictures on Wikipedia: “Christallen.jpg” and “Christallen records.jpg”. Unfortunately, the photographer has died a few years ago but was a close friend of ours. We have permission to use these pictures.

On March 12, I emailed copyright information to permissions-sv@wikimedia.org.

The following 5 images are not current and can be removed:

What should I do so you can restore this? Thank you for your help.

Structured Data - early depicts testing

The Structured Data on Commons development team has the very basic version of depicts statements available for early testing on Test-Commons. You can add very basic depicts statements to the file page by going into the new “Structured Data” tab located below the "Open in Media Viewer button." You can use the Latest Files link in the left side nav bar to select existing images, or use the UploadWizard to upload new ones to test with (although those images won’t actually show up on the site). The test site is not a fully functional replica of Commons, so there may be some overall problems in using the site, but you should be able to get a general idea of what using the feature is like.

Early next week I will call for broad, community-wide testing of the feature similar to what we did for Captions, with instructions for testing, known bugs, and a dedicated space to discuss the feature as well as a simple help page for using statements. Until then, you're welcome to post on the SDC talk page with what you might find while testing depicts.

Thanks in advance for trying it out, you'll be hearing more from me next week. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 21:59, 21 March 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]
