Confused by undeletion

This is from 2018, but I hope you could clear it up. Multiple files were supposedly undeleted (by you) per Commons:Undeletion_requests/Archive/2018-09#File:Vagina ultra01.JPG and related files. However, all of the files are red links, even though undeletion is the last log entry: [1]. Were these files renamed or something? There are no entries in the move log. I'm confused. —andrybak (talk) 21:15, 29 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Delete 4

Hi, Yann - I screwed up the metadata on :File:Jewel's Leo Bars (1962).jpg Will you delete all but the very last upload (the 5th one)? This is embarrassing, but it was one interruption after another, and I lost track of what I was doing. I even confused my laptop. *sigh* I'm so sorry to bother you...forgive me. Atsme Talk 📧 19:15, 3 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Adding - it appears the current image is the one with the correct meta data, but I was unable to delete or undue the other 4 incorrect ones. Commons can be a challenge to edit, and the new format is a bit of a learning curve. Atsme Talk 📧 10:54, 4 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

What happened with this legal file? why it was removed despite consents and permits? Pstryga (talk) 06:38, 29 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Please restore and insert in the right place in the article Pstryga (talk) 06:38, 29 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Pstryga: Do not recreate deleted images. As you are not the author, a formal written permission from the copyright holder. Please see COM:VRT for the procedure. Yann (talk) 08:28, 3 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
How Am I supose to send it? I've already send email to Wikipedia. By the way in polish law this kind of photos - made before 1994 are not protected, because they have't been during the period 1952 - 1994 .Reportage images were not protected, and still are not. However, it is important to sign the author due to personal rights that are still protected. I would like to remind you that copyright is a territorial law and international conventions provide protection on the basis of double. Pstryga (talk) 07:17, 5 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Pstryga: OK, if it is in the public domain, no permission is needed. You need to change the license to {{PD-Poland}}. For other cases where the permission is needed, please read COM:VRT. Thanks, Yann (talk) 18:26, 5 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Accurate but meaningless

You have been deleting various town council logos "as per COM:SPEEDY" - but this really tells us nothing. There are (if I have counted correctly) twenty one General and File criteria. It would be helpful to editors to know which you relied upon. DuncanHill (talk) 13:02, 6 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@DuncanHill: Logos have a copyright unless there are very simple, and even if redrawn they are derivative works. We need a permission from the copyright holder for a free license. Thanks, Yann (talk) 16:10, 8 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks. I think it would be helpful to give the criterion used in future. DuncanHill (talk) 17:49, 8 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

please remove my file

White House Christmas Tree photos from 2017 & 2020

I'm trying to upload official photos from these years. I've found one of the 2020 White House Christmas Tree. It was from Trump White House Archives and it was taken by Andrea Hanks and it is part of the public domain. We could add it to. [3] This source also confirms that it is an official photo taken by Hanks. [4] As for the 2017 White House Christmas Tree I found a photo from the U.S. Mission to the Organization of American States that we could use. [5] Or maybe we could use the one from the White House Historical Association. [6] Will any of these work? I'm also hoping to find the ones for 2013 and 2015. And1987 (talk) 16:33, 16 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@And1987: Hi, This one is clearly in the public domain. Note that I closed the DR as kept with the new source. Yann (talk) 19:18, 16 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Yann So both the photos of the 2017 and 2020 White House Christmas Trees are okay to upload? And1987 (talk) 19:31, 16 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@And1987: Yes. You can upload images when the source clearly mentioned that the photographer is from the White House staff. Yann (talk) 19:36, 16 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Adeletron 3030 seems to disagree with me about the photo of the 2017 tree from the White House Historical Association even though you said it was fine. If we can't use that one, then would it be better to use the one from the U.S. Mission to the Organization of American States [7] or take a screenshot of it from this video that was released by the White House? [8] And1987 (talk) 21:23, 16 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@And1987: Screenshots from this video are OK. This image from the U.S. Mission to the Organization of American States is probably OK, but I also wonder why it is not credited. While it is not required, they usually are. May you could ask someone at the COM:VPC who would know more about the details of US government pictures (@Clindberg: ?). Not quite decent behavior of one of the participants

Good afternoon colleague. Recently, on Wikimedia Commons, I came across the actions of one of the participants that were not quite clear to me, here is an example of how he justifies his edits 1. Of course, I don't work on Wikimedia Commons often, but in my opinion it's a bit wrong to write: "Belarus is not the successor to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania because instead of fighting against Russia, Belarus is now Russia's lapdog." I ask you, as a more experienced participant, to help clarify this issue. Thanks. Johnny Moor (talk) 20:33, 12 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Colleague hello @Yann: , I understand everything completely, or do you support these actions of this participant? He openly started vandalizing, and even demonstrates undisguised xenophobia, giving an absolutely incomprehensible reason for removal and pointing to nationality. Block warning you sent in August

Hello, thank you for warning me in advance of my impending block. I apologize for repeated violations, I am new to Wikimedia Commons and still learning the specifics of copyright policies and site mechanics, but I will be more careful next time I upload a file. It was a mistake on my part to use the batch-posting tool before I learned my way around the site. One of the mechanics that I'm having trouble figuring out is how to delete a file once you've uploaded it. With multiple of the offending files that were deleted, I realized that they were not uploaded properly or not fit to be uploaded, but I could not figure out how to remove them. I got myself a block warning because I thought I could be an autodidact on copyright policy, but I don't want to cause more damage and I must admit I don't know what I'm doing. Do you know any experienced users who are open to teaching beginners the ropes of Wikimedia Commons? Apelcini (talk) 13:57, 22 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Apelcini: I can help you. Did you read the policies (COM:L, etc.)? Is there anything you didn't understand? Do you have any question? Yann (talk) 17:52, 22 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'd like to know how to delete a file that you've uploaded, once you realize that it's not properly uploaded/not suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Apelcini (talk) 18:44, 22 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Apelcini: You can create deletion requests if there is a genuine reason for deletion: suspicion of copyright violation, doubt about scope, etc. Please provide as much information as possible (e.g. external sources, etc.) You must inform the uploader. This is best done with a gadget (see in your Preferences, section "Maintenance tools"). Please read Commons:Deletion policy first. Regards, Yann (talk) 10:12, 23 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Levin-Utkin

Why did you delete the image from Anatoly Levin-Utkin? RFERL gives permission to use its content [10]. IntrepidContributor (talk) 10:05, 23 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@IntrepidContributor: Content of this website is not acceptable for Commons without a free license, which must be provided via COM:VRT. Specifically, permission there doesn't allow commercial uses, which is mandatory for Commons. Please read COM:L. Thanks, Yann (talk) 10:17, 23 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The file Liāu Hiok-hiân.jpg was deleted for this reason: as per COM:SPEEDY.

This description is not particularly useful. More useful would be COM:CSD#F1, assuming that is the reason that applied. Was it? (I note that copyright concerns were raised in Commons:Deletion requests/File:Liāu Hiok-hiân.jpg.) Brianjd (talk) 13:43, 24 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

UK signature licensing

You marked it {{PD-text}}, but according to COM:SIG United Kingdom it seems like it would be protected. Could you double-check how creative it seems to be? DMacks (talk) 05:13, 26 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Need an eye on these

Irrespective of the SPI in en.wiki, I think we need to keep an eye on these uploads, especially on the licensing issues. Chaipau (talk) 07:32, 25 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Chaipau: Indeed. If this is a sock, it should be blocked right away. Could you fill up a request for checkuser? Thanks, Yann (talk) 07:48, 25 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sure I will place a request. Will the one here run concurrently/additionally with the one on en.wiki? The one in en.wiki seems to have concluded. Chaipau (talk) 11:52, 25 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sorry, I did not attend to that in time. In the meanwhile the SPI in en.Wikipedia has just concluded. The socks have been blocked. Do we still need it a RFCU here, or could we just rely on the en.Wiki result? Chaipau (talk) 02:13, 27 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Cordialement Hemerocalle40 (talk) 09:07, 29 October 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Deletion of File:Toyota - Rocky Kramer October 2022.jpg

Hi @Yann! It appears you deleted the Commons photo File:Toyota - Rocky Kramer October 2022.jpg. I'm not questioning your rationale for the deletion, but would like to understand it so I don't repeat the error and would like to know how to properly include the photo. It was my understanding that the producers of the commercial authorized the use of the screenshot. Is there some procedure to follow to have that photo authorized for use that will prevent it from being deleted again? It came from Flickr and I thought that as long as it was uploaded with the appropriate authorizations on Flickr, it was likewise authorized to be uploaded on Wikimedia Commons. Perhaps I misunderstood the appropriate procedure. I therefore would appreciate your helping me understand what I did wrong and how I can go about adding the photo properly. Thank you very much! Warriorboy85 (talk) 08:19, 1 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Warriorboy85: Hi,
There are 2 issues with this file. 1. The Flickr account is not the author of the poster, therefore the license there is not valid. This is called License laundering. I added this account to Commons:Questionable Flickr images. 2. We don't accept advertisement unless some educational value is demonstrated. Thanks, Yann (talk) 08:37, 2 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

File Open BLS Limoges.jpg

--Cactus93 (talk) 19:43, 2 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Cactus93: Bonjour,
— Preceding unsigned comment added by Cactus93 (talk • contribs) 21:40, 2 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Yann! I have put a public domain tag on the selected image, which from the page where I got it, seems to be the most likely, since the same page does not mention who created, but I have not removed the copyright warning sign, I prefer that it be reviewed and removed by the appropriate person. Tomy vaz (talk) 02:01, 3 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Tomy vaz: Hi,
This image might be in the public domain, but CC-0 is the wrong license anyway. But you need to show why it is in the public domain, specifically to give the date when it was first published (at least approximatively). I fixed it for you this time. Please add categories. Codenames cover box

Hello, can I ask you why did you delete the cover box of the board game called Codenames? It was used in the template about board/video game. It's commnon to use it (reference: en:File:3d-wingspan-768x752.png), and I believe the licensing was uploaded right way. So, what should I change to comply more? Thanks! UrsusLuin (talk) 09:52, 3 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yann (talk) 16:50, 3 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Closing your own DRs?

I get that Commons runs deletion requests a little differently than deletion discussions on Wikipedia... but it seems a little bit questionable to close the DRs you initiated (Commons:Deletion requests/File:Ndifreke Ukpong pix.jpg and Commons:Deletion requests/File:Ndifreke.jpg‎) in line with your initial leanings. Especially when two people have disagreed with you in the DR. It's not even a "copyright law trumps consensus" argument. You just liked the images. IronGargoyle (talk) 20:16, 4 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@IronGargoyle: There is no issue with this file. Why do you want it deleted? I frequently closed DRs I have opened with there is no issue. We don't need extra bureaucratic procedures for such cases. Yann (talk) 21:08, 4 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@IronGargoyle Both DRs were two versus two on the scope issue, after being open for well over a week, so I am not sure there is any problem there.
But, Yann, another user also suggested both files are copyvios! I would have liked to hear more about that issue. Brianjd (talk) 13:41, 7 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I don't have a problem with the outcome of the close per say (though I still stick by my belief that the images are out of scope). It's obviously a two vs. two and could go either way. I don't doubt Yann's fairness. It just seems like a bad look for admins to be closing DRs (or any discussion) in line with their opinion as a stated participant in said discussion. Maybe I'm just old fashioned. IronGargoyle (talk) 15:19, 7 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Brianjd: I didn't see any copyright issue. Could you elaborate please? Yann (talk) 19:44, 7 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Yann I think the DRs said it well: School portraits and other professional portraits do not qualify as "own work" either. Brianjd (talk) 09:42, 8 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@IronGargoyle: Sadly, we have a huge backlog all the times. We would need many more admins to have such stricter rules. Yann (talk) 19:44, 7 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Cordialement, Yann (talk) 21:42, 9 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Yann: I discovered that template and its usage here and started to use that in every screen shot I upload. Wiki6421 (talk) 11:59, 8 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well, this is wrong. Did you read what the template says? It is only valid for very simple images, and certainly not the ones you uploaded. Regards, 21:37, 9 November 2022 (UTC)

Simó Gratacòs i Oliveras.jpg

I already added a licence. Greetings Jordi Roqué (Discussió/Talk) 12:47, 8 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Jordi Roqué: OK, but this license is wrong. If the author is unknown, how do you know he died more than 70 years ago? I changed it to a correct license. Regards, Yann (talk) 21:33, 9 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello

Hello, I am Arya 88, I am administrator of Indonesian Wikipedia. Nice to meet you.

I just uploaded file named , File:BULAK LOR, JATIBARANG.jpg, I give {{self|cc-by-sa-4.0}} on the license header, but I changed my mind and put {{ delete}} per file uploader request. Unfortunately someone give me warning copyvio, and report me as vandalism, is anything wrong with my step? Thanks for your help. Arya 88 (talk) 15:03, 9 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Arya 88: That file is a duplicate of File:Kantor Kuwu Bulak Lor.jpg. I don't fully understand what happened there. @Jeff G.: Would you add a comment? Yann (talk) 21:30, 9 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Arya 88: First, you uploaded it as a duplicate, with a GFDL-only license, rather than using {{Rename}} on the original file. Then, you tried to delete it in this edit (now deleted), which was incomplete, lacking a proper reason and creation of the DR subpage. If memory serves, you also removed or failed to provide evidence of the provenance of the file (making it appear to be a copyvio).   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:30, 11 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
If I put the wrong tag, can you just remove the tag or correct it? No need to give fake warnings about copyvio. Not everyone understands how tags work. Arya 88 (talk) 11:49, 11 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I cannot just remove the tag or correct it now that the file has been deleted. Hopefully Yann can see what I wrote about in the deleted history and make his own decision.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:35, 11 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yes I uploaded same file twice, so I put delete tag to the last one. But he revert it, and give me copyvios warning, is that reasonable?? It is a baseless accusation, and violating COM:AGF.

What about Vandalism? He accused me of vandalism, even though he did vandalism on my talk page with inappropriate warning, WP:BITE. I feel humiliated here, what if this happened to a new user. We should guide them instead of biting them. I'm also an administrator at Wikipedia, and this is not how I treat other users. Thanks for your help. Arya 88 (talk) 23:21, 9 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Arya 88: Did you ask on his talk page? Yann (talk) 10:23, 10 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Arya 88: In this edit, you removed a link to User talk:Arya 88/Archive 1, effectively removing links to valid warnings User talk:Arya 88/Archive 1#Please do not remove problem tags and User talk:Arya 88/Archive 1#File copyright status. I probably should have used Template:Dont remove warnings instead, sorry about that.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:12, 11 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hey, on this problem, I was wrong, I was blocked and I accepted this consequences, please don't divert the conversation. Even though I'm admin Indonesian Wikipedia, in commons I am nothing, I am just newcomer and learner, You have to treat everyone well. Arya 88 (talk) 11:41, 11 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
PS: Is removing a tag an act of vandalism? so you report me as a vandal? Arya 88 (talk) 11:56, 11 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello Yann,

Could you please explain your decision? Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Ukraine (as well as Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Russia) definitely is about publication, not creation 70 or more years ago and there are one or two hundred deletion requests ended up with deletion, cf. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 by 10 different administrators. It seems to me that it would be wise for you to open a discussion and invite these administrators if you have a dissenting opinion. Xunks (talk) 08:04, 11 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The nominator was blocked for 6 months for abusing multiple accounts and making disruptive deletion requests. This is a sufficient reason to close the DR. If there is another issue, please open it again with a new rationale. Thanks, Yann (talk) 21:56, 11 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
File:Pierre Ciceri by Nadar.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

I don't know why this was deleted, I explained that the item was evidence in a criminal trial and is public domain, as is clearly marked.

The text itself no longer enjoys any copyright protection because NXIVM and its subsidiaries were dismantled/seized by the U.S. government.

Please note in the text here, that the government seized "First Principles Incorporated" and "all assets rights thereof, including but not limited to bank accounts and intellectual property rights" https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nyed.420065/gov.uscourts.nyed.420065.1109.0.pdf

Please restore this item forthwith. Evackost (talk) 12:15, 14 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Deletion requests/File:South stand after tear gas fired in to the crowd - Narasi TV.jpg

Can you elaborate a bit more on your close of Commons:Deletion requests/File:South stand after tear gas fired in to the crowd - Narasi TV.jpg? I don't think it properly addressed the concerns about the videos coming from public sources (and not the news org itself), which I and another editor raised. Yeeno (talk) 21:12, 6 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

That other editor would be me. I was just about to post my own question about this DR. I think @Yeeno’s argument was compelling, and at least deserved further discussion. Brianjd (talk) 13:28, 7 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
For reference (since the DR is closed): The video description has been removed at the source, but is still available in a Wayback Machine archive:
We analyze thousands of videos from public sources as well as contribution from eyewitnesses.
Brianjd (talk) 14:21, 7 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Yeeno and Brianjd: When an organisation such as a TV channel publishes something on YouTube, they know what they are doing. They don't add a free license whithout doing basic checks. So I suppose they bought the rights of the images they publish, which allows them to republish them under a free license. I don't see any reason to doubt that unless there is evidence to the contrary. I don't see any such evidence here. Regards, Yann (talk) 19:53, 7 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Yann: I don't think that is a safe assumption to make because, as I stated in the DR, news reporting is often protected under fair use or fair dealing, so they wouldn't have to get the rights of all the content they use. For example, viral videos are featured in newscasts all the time, but I'm pretty sure it does not grant the news organization the right to license and sell the viral video to whoever they want. In this case, it would've probably hindered their investigation if they had to track down the creators of every single video and only use ones that they got the rights to. Hence the concept of fair use exists, to allow news organizations and educators to use whatever materials they need to further their work without fear of copyright or rights clearances.
With regards to the CC license, it has been applied to every single video on their channel, including ones featuring footage of protests in Iran. While I'm sure the parts of the video strictly produced by them (the animations, their reporters speaking in some videos) are licensed under CC, there is absolutely no indication they have the rights to relicense such a broad assortment of footage. Yeeno (talk) 20:47, 7 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Yann But do they really know what they are doing? Here is a quick list of organisations that don’t:

Help to review and resubmit a draft

Hello @Yann - I recently created a page about Bonaventure Dossou but it has not been accepted and I have been blocked so I can not edit it. Can you please help review, edit, and improve the draft for resubmission?

Thanks in advance Africanainews (talk) 01:55, 16 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Africanainews: Hi, You have to ask on the English Wikipedia itself, not on Commons. Thanks, Yann (talk) 19:48, 17 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

All the posters were given freely by the producers

Hi @Yann and @Trade,

Thanks for keeping Commons just and free of copyright violations. The images I recently uploaded (link here or on my talk page) were given by the producers, One Fine Day Films, as part of an outreach my host institution (The Africa Narrative) is doing to have more stakeholders in the African film industry to contribute materials needed on Wikipedia to Commons through the AfroCreatives WikiProject. I am the Wikimedian in Residence for The African Narrative hence why I had to upload the images knowing fully well what the policies are including citing them as the authors.

Can you kindly restore the images? I would have also appreciated if I was given the dignity of time to even explain myself after the hours and costs it took me to upload these images for the sake of open knowledge. But I get what this could cost Wikimedia and the amount of copyright vio you see daily.

I appreciate your understanding and everything else you keep doing in this space. Danidamiobi (talk) 19:44, 17 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Danidamiobi: Hi,
As for any document previously published elsewhere, a formal written permission for a free license from the copyright holder is needed. Please see COM:VRT for the procedure. Most often, third parties do not understand what a free license means: the possibility to reuse the document for any purpose, inlcuding commercial ones. Thanks, Yann (talk) 19:47, 17 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for your response @Yann, does it mean that for a campaign like this where we want to encourage film producers, directors etc. to share posters, stills and other valuable media, we would need a formal written permission every time they upload?
A lot of African film related articles don't have images and we are reaching out to them as well as building a portal to spotlight and improve existing cinema content. It is a complex process to convince people unfamiliar with Wikimedia and Commons to upload their work to Commons and then write a template based letter. Could there be any better interface/user experience you may advise? Should they create accounts themselves and indicate it as their own work? Danidamiobi (talk) 20:27, 17 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Danidamiobi: You could have a general permission, i.e. that an account is verified, and that all uploads are OK. You can ask more details on Commons:Volunteer Response Team/Noticeboard. Regards, Yann (talk) 20:35, 17 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Costa Rican images

Hello, sorry if there are words that are not understood, I communicate through a Google translator.

I understand that there are images taken from the Internet, I accept that. But I have uploaded pictures of soccer players from Flickr and it mentions "some rights reserved". I have seen in other images that have been uploaded under those words and they still remain, can you explain to me why they have been deleted? Dey H.E (talk) 17:10, 18 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Dey H.E: Hi,
They need to be published on Flickr with a free license by the copyright holder. Otherwise it is License laundering. Regards, Yann (talk) 17:14, 18 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Yann, I just wanted to note that such a quick closure after my request for other opinions was clearly not the idea. Leyo 22:42, 18 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

OK, reverted. Yann (talk) 13:48, 19 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

"In use"

I don't see how "in use" is a valid argument against deleting an image, nor did you address my concerns other than saying "no valid reason for deletion". Can you provide an actual rebuttal to my concerns? Thank you. DS (talk) 19:55, 19 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@DragonflySixtyseven: Yes, it is a valid argument. We usually don't delete an image if it is in use, unless there is a copyright issue. Yann (talk) 09:23, 20 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
And there is a copyright issue, which you did not address. DS (talk) 14:44, 20 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@DragonflySixtyseven: Sorry, I didn't understand what you mean, as you didn't mention any link. Is there a sketch of the fictional country in the book (or elsewhere), from which this could be copied? Or is it Immanuel Giel's invention, who uploaded it? Yann (talk) 16:28, 20 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
There are images of the fictional country in the book, yes: here, for instance (from a used bookstore selling copies of the book) - notice the logo for "Jetlag Travel" in the lower left. Or, if you have an archive.org account, the original.
Immanuel Giel's drawing is recognizably derived from the map of the fake country in the book. It even uses the same basic color scheme: light green region to the west, gray/green region to the south, yellow/orange region to the east, and central region in blue, plus a red circle for the capital. And also Category:Ternopil municipality to Category:Ternopil Hromada, Category:Terebovlia municipality to Category:Terebovlia Hromada, Category:Monastyryska municipality to Category:Monastyryska Hromada, Category:Zbarazh municipality to Category:Zbarazh Hromada, and also Category:Skadovsk municipality to Category:Skadovsk Hromada! You don't need an admin to do that. Just copy the content of the source to the target category. Thanks, Yann (talk) 20:32, 22 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Then there will be the wrong story of the change of categories. Need to keep the correct story of editing. Example: correct name this category → Category:Skadovsk Hromada. Author correct name category — user Ykvach. If you move the subcategories, will be the other way around — user Ykvach will become the author incorrect name category. This is the wrong position. --Микола Василечко (talk) 20:46, 22 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Tagging files that are undeleted

Hi Yann. Thanks for your work on undeleting files. I have noticed that you tape {{Kept}} on the talkpages of those undeleted files. Next time please use {{Undeleted}} instead of {{Kept}}, as different procedures are involved between simply keeping a file after DR and undeleted a file after another admin performed a deletion process. Doc gyneco

Bonjour Yann.

Cordialement, Yann (talk) 23:12, 29 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

EviRauter.webp

Hi Yann. I uploaded again the file EviRauter.webp because this time I contacted the owner and she is going to send the authorization request by email. Isn't this the correct step? Because you have deleted it. Wikidomainer (talk) 00:53, 29 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Wikidomainer: Do you have a ticket number? Otherwise the file will be undeleted if and when the permission is validated by a volunteer from the VR team. Yann (talk) 19:21, 29 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello Yann,

I don't have a ticket number. The authorization will be sent (or has been sent) to permissions-it@wikimedia.org , as the author is from Italy. Thank you. Wikidomainer (talk) 20:42, 30 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Why did you unilaterally delete File:Drug and sex.png without starting a deletion request? @Phari71: Hi,
As it was mentioned in the deletion request, the license for this video is not valid, as it includes content from other sources which are not free. If you have more questions, you can ask on COM:VPC or COM:UDR. Thanks, Yann (talk) 10:16, 1 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Could you undelete and formally nominate recently deleted files by User:狄の用務員?

Most of their uploads are AI generated own works that superficially look like proffesional art, and they’re an inexperienced good-faith user who might not understand how the ticket system works. I’d like to send them through standard deletion process to see if my hypothesis is correct. Dronebogus (talk) 12:25, 2 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Monnaies du British Museum

Bonjour, je crois me souvenir que tu as supprimé une image de monnaie romaine téléchargée par Tintero21 il y a quelques temps (? les pages du Bistro sont trop vite archivées !) or ce contributeur a recommencé en me donnant une info que le BM refuse l'utilisation commerciale ce qui rends le fichier non PD il me semble ? : voir [[13]].

@Siren-Com: File:Constantius I medallion British Museum.jpg vient en fait de File:Beaurains Treasure (5).JPG. Donc c'est bon puisque ce n'est pas le musée qui a fait la photo. Mais j'ai demandé la suppression pour d'autres : Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Tintero21. Yann (talk) 17:47, 3 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Images from Google Arts & Culture

Hello Yann, hope you're doing well. I was browsing through the Category:Paintings by Amrita Sher-Gil wherein I saw some of your uploads. Wanted to know if those images were provided by Google A&C directly/extracted from their website in some way or clicked by you itself? Asking this because I'm planning to add more of her paintings, the images of which I have clicked on the museum visit. Although, not all of them are up to the mark. So some support from A&C website could be useful. Let me know about it. Regards - DesiBoy101 (talk) 19:44, 4 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@DesiBoy101: Yes, I got them from the URLs mentioned. No help from Google. Yann (talk) 20:35, 4 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
So I believe it was possible to download images directly from their website back then because the settings seems to be changed now. Or is there a way around it?
Also, while uploading self-clicked images of PD paintings, is there a need to provide any additional information or just adding the relevant PD license is fine? DesiBoy101 (talk) 03:17, 5 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
They use a software called Zoom, so you need a gadget called Dezoomify. I use it as an extension to Chrome. If the painting is in the public domain, just use {{PD-Art}} with the appropriate license. Yann (talk) 12:32, 5 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Permission not sufficient

Hello. I am the VRT agent handling permission for File:Skeeter Reece carrying Albert Alter juggling while on unicycle.jpg and File:Skeeter Reece on Unicycle.jpg in VRT ticket 2022120610000906. Would you please clarify why you tagged those images as having insufficient permission? The ticket has a permission declaration explicitly for the first image, and a later message in the same ticket clearly stated that the declaration applies to both images. If the images had not been deleted first, I would have tagged them differently and all would be well. ~Anachronist (talk) 23:24, 9 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Anachronist: Hi, I didn't "tagged those images as having insufficient permission". I only added the ticket number, waiting for its validation, i.e. [14] and [15]. I am not a VRT agent, so I can't validate the tickets myself. Yann (talk) 10:02, 10 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I see. Thanks for the explanation. I thought my initial undeletion request was sufficient, but now I understand that you didn't want to place the {{Permission ticket}} tag because you couldn't verify it. I thought perhaps there was a different problem of which I was unaware.
As the VRT agent handling the ticket, I changed the tag in each image. ~Anachronist (talk) 20:08, 10 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question from the CPUG Board

Dear user group member,

I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.

With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.

That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.

However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:

Commons:Commons Photographers User Group/Board Elections 2022

We'll gather feedback until December 27, and we'll keep you in the loop about the outcomes of this process.

Thanks so much for your ongoing support of our group. I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best.

Why?

@Yann, you deleted almost all of my screenshots because they're not {{PD-ineligible}} but you kept this file whence I learned about the usage of ineligible template. Can you talk about the reason of such decide? Thanks. Wiki6421 (talk) 06:12, 12 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Wiki6421: File:Ecosia 70,000,000 trees planted by users (06 D. 10 M. 2019 A.).png contains only simple text, that's why it is ineligible for copyright. The other two don't. Beside, we only accept screenshots if there are notable, e.g. related to an article on Wikipedia. Yann (talk) 09:11, 12 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Motd/2022-12-13 (en)

Is it a good idea to put so much text?😂

i'm concerned whether this would "break" the main page. RZuo (talk) 06:16, 12 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@RZuo: Hmm, I didn't think about that. The text could be reduced if really necessary, but best would do create a mock-up of the main page with the MOTD to check before. Yann (talk) 09:22, 12 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
A file you uploaded is on the main page!

File:HSCA-MLK FBI Cartha-DeLoach Nov-28-1978.mp3, that you uploaded, is on the main page today. Thank you for your contributions to this project.

Category discussion warning

Deletion requests by country has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

@Yasminkaa: There is no file by that name. Yann (talk) 13:18, 14 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Cordialement, Yann (talk) 13:21, 14 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Merci Yasminkaa (talk) 17:18, 14 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yasminkaa (talk) 17:25, 14 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Deletion of a picture

Hello there friend. A few weeks ago, I nominated a file for deletion, the one called "Filhos de Gustave Rumbelsperger". Here's the link for it: File:Filhos_de_Gustave_Rumbelsperger.jpg.

Those two photos belong to my personal archive. They belonged to my family for many years. I added them to the wikipedia when I was around 15 years old, when I was creating the wikipedia page about my great-great-grandfather Gustave Rumbelsperger, which you can find in this link https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gustave_Rumbelsperger.

At the time, I thought the wikipedia was just a mere archive that you could delete things at your heart content. By that time, I didn't understood english as now so I didn't actually read any of the wikipedia rules, hence you'll see in my history many mistakes done, which I wouldn't have done if I had better knowledge of the language and of the rules. And I know you were responsible for keeping the file in the wiki commons. I would politely ask you to reconsider that decision. Please, those pictures are from private collection of family history and I wouldn't like the anymore to be there. They are different from Gustave Rumbelsperger photo, since that was published in a public newspaper in the past. But the archive "Filhos de Gustave Rumbelsperger", they weren't published anywhere except here in the wikimedia by myself during a misunderstood action, where I just wanted to write an article about my ancestor. When I made that, I thought I could delete the picture any time I wanted. I didn't even bothered to fill all the info about it, like giving myself the proper credit for the photo, describing about how it's from my personal archives, you probably have seen how it's a really incomplete archive with very little description. So, again, I politely ask you to reconsider that decision and actually delete that file from the wikimedia commons. Please, imagine if you posted a photo of a relative of yours by accident on the internet and you were prohibited of deleting it, of fixing your mistake! You probably would be upset, wouldn't you? Looking foward to your reply, thanks a lot for your attention. Rumbelsperger (talk) 05:52, 15 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Rumbelsperger: It is currently in use in Portuguese Wikipedia, so it can't be deleted now. If you convince people there to remove, then it may be deleted. Thanks, Yann (talk) 10:58, 15 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I want some advice on what to do about this file. The painting is public domain, the photograph is most definitely not. Should I file another DR, wait for it to be speedy deleted or should I just put a copyvio tag on it? Abzeronow (talk) 19:03, 15 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Abzeronow: Yes, the frame should be cropped out, and the new image imported over this one. Thanks, Yann (talk) 19:50, 15 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
OK, overwrote with a new version. Abzeronow (talk) 20:09, 15 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Ilka Gedő and György Román ghetto drawings

What do I have to do so that this page can be restored?

This is an exhibition catalogue. I am the son of Ilka Gedő.

sockpuppet template

Yann I have checked from each of the 4 links in the sockpuppet template you added to create my user page that there is no evidence or logs of my being a sockpuppet of the person you named. Additionally I have no editing or behavioral history in common with that user. As an administrator of this project you should either block my account if you are so certain that I am a disturbance to this project or else act in a civilised and respectful manner to all contributors. Another overwritten file

Hi Yann. File:Alberto Fernández 2019.png is another file overwritten by User:MegaTom98 that probably needs a revision deleted. I doubt this user will ever come back to Commons since it appears they only showed up for a few days in 2019 and haven't been back since. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:11, 18 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

My message about you on EN-WP

As a courtesy to you, I am informing you that I have reported your edits at EN-WP, for which my talk page access there was blocked. See diff.

I am now, civilly, asking you to promptly take any corrective action you deem fit, if you feel the need to do so, otherwise I shall escalate under the WMF's terms of use for "Paid contributions without disclosure".

You are free to do whatever you want, including blocking me on Commons if you deem fit. However, it would be better for all concerned that this dispute between us is confined to Wikimedia avenues and doesn't spill into the real world. SinghIsFxing (talk) 04:08, 19 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

If you can't understand what's wrong with that post, you shouldn't be editing here. It seems you have a grudge against Jai Jagat or its organisators. But you got the wrong target here. If you have any complain, go to [16]. Also, about your claims regarding the GODL, with your aggressive behaviour, you lost all credibility whatever are your professional skills. Happy holidays

Happy New Year!

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year, Yann!

The other day, I was having a conversation with someone about holiday cards and social media. It occurred to me that, in the years since I left Facebook, the site I use most to communicate with people I like isn't actually a social media site at all. If you're receiving this, it's pretty likely I've talked with you more recently than I have my distant relatives and college friends on FB, at very least, and we may have even collaborated on something useful. So here's a holiday "card", Wikimedia friend. :) Hope the next couple weeks bring some fun and/or rest. — Rhododendrites talk |  19:53, 22 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Happy holidays!

Happy holidays, Yann!

Hello Yann, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! It has been a pleasure to have you as a fellow Wikimedian this year. Wherever you are, enjoy the festive season and stay warm (if you're north of the Tropic of Cancer)! Your help in maintaining, improving and expanding Wikimedia Commons will always be appreciated.

Greetings from Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Image 'Microsoft Clipchamp screenshot.png' deleted

Hello, the image File:(Microsoft) Clipchamp screenshot.png was deleted, but I made this screenshot myself. And there are more people which also make certain screenshots themselves, which are not getting deleted. Minionguyjpro (talk) 06:18, 25 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Minionguyjpro: This is under a copyright by Microsoft. Only screenshots of free software are allowed, or when the content is too simple to get a copyright. This is not the case here. Yann (talk) 10:09, 25 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You can’t close a deletion discussion that you’ve voted in just because you’re an administrator when there’s still voters who don’t agree. That comes across as a supervote, especially when you used your own not-great rationale (“sexually derogatory” which basically just means “I think it’s offensive” which everything on WMC is to somebody) as the close rationale. Dronebogus (talk) 21:41, 26 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Deletion requests are not vote. The decision is made based on the arguments, whatever majority these arguments have. Yann (talk) 22:19, 26 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You can’t base it on your own argument! Dronebogus (talk) 22:52, 26 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
This is (at least) the third of these DRs that you have closed unusually speedily, despite being involved in them, and despite there being an onging and contentious ANU thread banning their creator on the basis of this content. Deleting them thus makes it increasingly difficult to progress that ANU thread. These deletion actions are unjustified and disruptive. Andy Dingley (talk) 22:40, 26 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Dronebogus and Andy Dingley: What educational use do you find for this image? If you can give me an example, I will undelete it. Yann (talk) 23:07, 26 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_maid#Later_history explicitly lists and depicts “erotic french maid” as a popular subtype of the look/stereotype. This is a perfectly good illustration of this concept. Dronebogus (talk) 23:10, 26 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I don't think it is a good illustration for that article, but meh... Yann (talk) 23:24, 26 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No Yann, don't even go there. This is a procedural issue, about you breaching policy to apply a personal admin supervote in pre-emptively closing a DR. You can not defend yourself against that as "but my supervote is better than your reason". The fact is that you shouldn't have been closing these at all, and certainly not in under a day. Andy Dingley (talk) 23:27, 26 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Isn’t Yann the one who insists that Eiffel Tower lighting photos are not copyvios despite all evidence to the contrary? I think it might be time for a de-mopping… Dronebogus (talk) 23:29, 26 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

File:Market Lane Euro 2020.jpg

Hi. Confused at your explanation for the deletion of File:Market Lane Euro 2020.jpg as this was a photo I took myself, and labelled the photo the correct way. Vaselineeeeeeee (talk) 18:42, 28 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
